BBC RADIO LEICESTER

SETTING A CHALLENGE

BBC Children in Need is a charity whose vision is to ensure that every child in the UK has a childhood that is safe, happy and secure, and allows them the chance to reach their potential.

In October 2017, BBC Radio Leicester contacted us to discuss their idea to publish a recipe book to raise funds for the charity. They had selected 50 recipes that had featured on its weekly ‘Food Friday’ cookery slot on Ben Jackson’s mid-morning radio show, including creations from Leicester-based Great British Bake Off winner Holly Bell, local food bloggers and home cooks.

Their publication deadline was the annual BBC Children in Need telethon, just a month away, so it would require flair and focus to turn the recipes and photographs into a professional publication that would be available in time for BBC Radio Leicester’s listeners to buy and support the charity.

BROADCASTING THE PROCESS

To maximise the proceeds for the charity, Tudor Rose provided its services entirely free of charge. Our project management, design and editorial teams worked together with guidance from the BBC Children in Need team to meet this challenge. Ben Jackson and his team visited the Tudor Rose offices during book production, broadcasting interviews with our staff to share the process with their listeners.

In just 25 days from the first meeting with Tudor Rose, 2,000 copies of the book were off the printing press, bound and ready for sale.

A SELL-OUT FOR CHARITY

With copies available to purchase at the BBC Radio Leicester offices and at retailers throughout the county, the launch of the book was a big hit on the airwaves and social media. The ‘Food Friday’ recipe book quickly sold out, resulting in a large cheque for BBC Children in Need.
