World Meteorological Organization
Established in 1950, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is the authoritative voice of the United Nations (UN) on the state and behaviour of the Earth’s atmosphere, its interaction with surfaces including oceans, ecosystems and polar regions, the climate this produces and the resulting distribution of water resources.

WMO plays a unique and powerful role in contributing to the safety and welfare of humanity, aiding the free and unrestricted exchange of data, products and services and contributing to policy formulation at national and international levels.

Recognising the importance of shared knowledge and experiences in decision making, WMO sought to publish a collection of articles to coincide with the conference it had organised in collaboration with the Government of Spain (Ministry of Environment) – the International Conference on Secure and Sustainable Living: Social and Economic Benefits of Weather, Climate and Water Services held in Madrid, Spain on 19-22 March 2007.

Tudor Rose worked with the WMO and its fellow UN organisations, as well as with other non-UN organisations to commission, compile and publish Elements for Life, bringing together expert opinions on the socio-economic benefits of meteorological services across the world. The book contains a range of articles exploring the benefits to society of products and services provided by the meteorological and hydrological community, especially the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS).

Elements for Life certainly added to the excellence of the documentation made available to the high level participants at the conference and will serve as a memento and a model of cooperation and service for years to come,″ says WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud. ″Tudor Rose was able to draw most naturally from the contributions of the members of the meteorological and hydrological communities, as well as from those of the wider users’ community. This approach will be most valuable, as the future will no doubt demonstrate, to decision makers.″

Elements for Life is the latest publication produced by Tudor Rose in its ongoing public-private partnership with the UN.
